After Easter and the Future of the World

June 20, 2014

I was a bit surprised this Monday after Easter to wake up with a bit of a post-Easter (and post family time) let-down, thinking of what needs doing, and also of what in the world needs fixing!

Then I reread this from N.T. Wright:

As I reflect on God’s future plans for the world, I am reminded of the great teacher and pastor Bishop Lesslie Newbigin.

Someone once asked him whether, as he looked to the future, he was optimistic or pessimistic.

His answer was simple and characteristic.

“I am,” he said, “neither an optimist nor a pessimist. Jesus Christ is risen from the dead!”

So, Wright says,

The whole world is waiting, in tiptoe with expectation, for the moment when that resurrection life and power sweeps through it, filling it with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.

(From Surprised by Hope, N. T. Wright. 107-8)

Jesus didn’t die again after Sunday. He is risen indeed today!
